City crews remove offensive words from Davis monumen

GARY LONG on Brownsville Herald –  More than one week after vandals defaced the Jefferson Davis monument in Washington Park, City of Brownsville Public Works employees worked to restore the memorial to its original condition.
The monument was defaced late Sept. 28 with the words “No Trump,” “No KKK” and “No fascist USA” in red spray paint on the monument. Last week, the Texas division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans Sixth Brigade offered a $2,500 reward for “information leading to the arrest and conviction of the parties responsible” for the vandalism.
As of Wednesday no one had come forward, said Mark Phillips, the group’s brigade commander. Brownsville police reported no leads in the case.
“I would love for someone to come forward” with information about the vandalism, Phillips said from Corpus Christi. “The monument belongs to the citizens of Brownsville. They own it because it was given to them by the United Daughters of the Confederacy. … We will gladly pay the reward. All they have to do is contact the Brownsville Police Department.”…
