We’ve heard a lot about the alt-right versus the protestors in Charlottesville, and each group’s role in inciting a riot. What we haven’t heard a lot about is the law enforcement presence.
A newly issued 200-page report shows the failure of the city of Charlottesville and its police force to handle the violence back in August. The report shows that the police were ill prepared—not properly trained or equipped to deal with the situation. Once the crowds of protesters and white supremacists grew larger and larger and began fighting, police didn’t do anything.
The report reveals that part of the police strategy was basically to let people duke it out. If the small skirmishes escalated into more violent encounters, police could more easily declare it an unlawful assembly.
Police Chief Al Thomas of Charlottesville was quoted as saying, “Let them fight.” The police chief does not recall making the statement, but he did say that he instructed his police force to wait to “see how things played out”.
