Drunk Driver Who Killed NFL Player Has Been Deported At Least Twice

MARION COUNTY, IN (The Indianapolis Star) – Indianapolis Colts linebacker Edwin Jackson and 54-year-old Jeffrey Monroe, an Uber driver, were killed early Feb. 4 after a suspected drunk driver struck them on I-70. The suspect is Manuel Orrego-Savala, a 37-year-old Guatemalan citizen who is in the U.S. illegally. This is what we know about him:

Orrego-Savala is accused of fatally striking Jackson and Monroe around 4 a.m. Feb. 4. The two victims were standing outside of their vehicle. Investigators believe Monroe pulled to the side of the road when Jackson became ill, and that Monroe got out of his car to assist Jackson.

Indiana State Police say Orrego-Savala drove his Ford F-150 pick-up truck onto the emergency shoulder of the westbound lanes of I-70 and struck Jackson and Monroe.

Police say Orrego-Savala tried to flee the scene on foot but was arrested soon after on the ramp to Holt Road. He gave police the fake name of Alex Cabrera-Gonsales after the collision, police said.

According to a preliminary probable cause affidavit filed in Marion County Superior Court, Orrego-Savala’s blood-alcohol level was .239 percent. In Indiana, a driver is presumed intoxicated at 0.08 percent, meaning Orrego-Savala’s
