Announcing the inaugural Major General Robert Rodes Confederate Sharpshooter Competition at the 2018 SCV National Reunion! Event will take place on the morning of Wednesday 18 July 2018.
General Robert Rodes’ Division was well known for developing sharpshooters and sharpshooter/picket tactics during the War Between the States. For reference, check out the book “Shock Troops of the Confederacy” by Fred L. Ray.
During the war, regiments would hold marksmanship competitions to determine who would be assigned as sharpshooters and awarded the winners with match grade rifles, many of the most prized rifles were imported English Whitworth rifles.
These men used these rifles with great effect on the battlefields. In fact, Union General John Sedgwick scolded his men for ducking Confederate bullets on 9 May 1864 during the Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse by stating that “They couldn’t hit an elephant at that distance” and then was almost instantaneously shot through the head and killed by one of these sharpshooters.
This inaugural shooting competition will pit SCV members against each other for the chance to win a reproduction Whitworth rifle donated by Dixie Gun Works. There will be prizes also for the highest shooter in each Army and HQ Camp.
