Memorial Day service in Halifax Co. (VA) honors ALL fallen heroes

(The Gazette-Virginian) A crowd gathered at the Halifax County War Memorial on Memorial Day honored America’s fallen heroes.

“Poor is the nation that has no heroes. Poorer still is the nation that having heroes fails to remember and honor them,” guest speaker at the Memorial Day service, Gary Lee Hall, said, quoting Roman citizen Cicero.

Hall reflected on the sacrifices of the heroic men and women who gave their lives in service to their country.

“Who were these soldiers?” Hall asked, relating the answer, “Especially in the early wars, they were often farm boys that had never been further than 10 miles from their home. They were living the life they were expecting to live until they died. Then war came.”

Hall continued, “As volunteers or those who were called up, they met their obligation to country, state and family. When they left their homes, they knew they faced the chance of never coming back, never seeing their loved ones. Many didn’t.”
