Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan’s Army of the Potomac (Union) suffered a humiliating defeat at the Battle of Leesburg (Ball’s Bluff), Virginia.

- 1867 – Near Medicine Lodge, Kansas a treaty was signed by southern Great Plains Indian leaders. requiring the Plains tribes to relocate to a reservation in western Oklahoma.
- 1921 – U.S. President Warren G. Harding villified the South in a speech against lynching.
- 1967 – Thousands of demonstrators marched in Washington, DC in opposition to the Vietnam War.
- 1992 – Jim Garrison, the Louisiana District Attorney made famous for investigating the JFK assassination in the Oliver Stone film JFK, died at the age of 70.
