Bruton Parish Church hangs plaque to explain existing Civil War-era tablet
(Virginia Gazette) – Unbeknownst to parishioners and the public, Bruton Parish Church officials hung a new plaque explaining an existing Civil War-era tablet that honors dead Confederate soldiers from the 1862 Battle of Williamsburg.
The installation took place without ceremony Wednesday morning inside the church on Duke of Gloucester Street, according to the Rev. Christopher L. Epperson, Bruton Parish’s rector. No installation program is planned.
However, the congregation will be sent an email telling of the installation and urging the people take a look at the plaque along with a sign erected outside the church. Both acknowledge the free, freed and enslaved African Americans who were an essential part of Bruton’s history.
A notice of the installation of the plaque and sign will also be made during Sunday’s church services, he said.
The new plaque went on display almost two years to the day after Epperson and then-senior warden Melinda Morgan notified parishioners that an explanatory plaque would be installed. A forum for parishioners had been held earlier in December 2022 with discussions about what to do regarding the Civil War plaque.
