“Take it down now”: King Day at the Dome started as call to action over Confederate Flag

The annual King Day at the Dome rally as people know it today was something different a quarter century ago when it was first launched.

It was a colossal call to action when nearly 50,000 people marched to the State House demanding lawmakers remove the Confederate flag from atop the State House dome. Months later in May of 2000, a plan was passed to take the flag off its prominent perch on the dome where it had flown since 1961, and place it next to the Confederate memorial on the Gervais Street side of the State House.

The move didn’t end the fight for its complete removal. The flag remained a significant talking point in King Day rallies, but focus also shifted to issues like education, the criminal justice system, racial equality and access to healthcare.

It also became a destination spot for political candidates. Eventual President Barack Obama spoke at the rally during his run to the White House in 2008, and ever since, political hopefuls have been sure to make their voices heard at the rally during critical election cycles.
